Nearly everyone who “lives aboard” on Boot Key Harbor in the Florida keys has a nickname. Even the town of Marathon, in which the harbor is located, has one; single men call it “Man-a-thon.” Some people move here to save money, some come to retire, some have always dreamed of living on a boat, and others are escaping a previous life on shore. Whether they were a nurse, a biologist, or a company executive, nearly everyone who takes up residence accepts whatever low-wage job they can find nearby.
